In May 2022, the Nashville Department of Transportation presented to the neighborhood about a new complete and green street project. The project includes protected bike lanes, new pedestrian crossings with flashing signals, updated bus stops as well as some potential landscaping improvements, such as bioswales (vegetated islands that manage stormwater in addition to protecting the bikeway and providing landscaping) or trees, along 12th Avenue South. The project runs from Lawrence Avenue to Division Street in the Gulch.

Through the 2017 WalknBike master planning process, the section of 12th Avenue South between the Gulch and the 12 South neighborhoods was ranked as the number one bikeway project priority in Nashville.

You can learn more about the project and review maps and renderings on NDOT’s website. The presentation that was given to the neighborhood is also available here.

If you have questions about the project and you would like to contact NDOT directly, you can reach out to Anna Dearman, walking and biking manager at NDOT, at anna.dearman@nashville.gov or 615-862-8735.

Timeline

Construction is expected to begin on May 23, and NDOT is aiming to have the project completed by the end of 2022. During construction, driving lanes will be reduced to one lane in each direction plus the center turn lane for duration of project. Temporary bus stops and a bike route detour will be created (likely to use South Street, 10th Ave. S., 16th Ave. S/17th Ave. S), and some sidewalks along the route will be repaired or replaced during construction.

Conversations around landscaping selections and maintenance are ongoing, and the neighborhood will share more news about those decisions as we learn more.
